The former postdoctoral research project of Dr. Maria Alessandra Bilotta (IEM-FCSH-UNL) was on «Portuguese juridical manuscripts production and illumination between 14th and 15th centuries and theirs connections with manuscripts production and illumination in the French “Midi” (specially Toulouse, Avignon and Montpellier) and in the North-Mediterranean regions (Italy and Cataluña)», the project is carried out since 2011 within the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM: http://iem.fcsh.unl.pt/) of the Nova University of Lisbon and funded by the FCT (SFRH / BPD / 74298 / 2010).
The post-doctoral research of Maria Alessandra Bilotta involves, since 2007, the southern France illuminated juridical manuscript production, especially in Toulouse, Montpellier and Avignon between the late 13th and the first half of the 14th century . She has developed a research methodology that aims to consider these manuscripts and their illustration as the result of an original and creative process based on travels, exchanges and interactions of illuminators; on the circulation of objects, manuscripts, patrons and patterns, as well as on the sharing of common knowledge in the north Mediterranean geographical areas (Italy, Southern France, Iberian Peninsula; (http://www.univ-avignon.fr/fr/actualites/singleview/article/7/histoire-medievale-publication.html).edit

Il libro è incentrato sull’analisi storica e storico-artistica dei manoscritti realizzati ad uso della Curia Papale e del Laterano dal VI al XIII secolo. La ricerca percorre tre direttrici principali: la delineazione delle modalità che, nei secoli centrali del Medioevo, hanno portato all’istituzione e allo sviluppo di un’attività scrittoria e di conservazione libraria in ambito papale; l’individuazione sistematica degli esemplari manoscritti superstiti, testimoni di tale attività; l’analisi degli esemplari medesimi, condotta mediante diversi approcci metodologici (storico-artistico, paleografico, codicologico, filologico, liturgico, ecc.). Si restituisce, in questo modo, un aspetto molto significativo, e finora poco esplorato nel suo insieme, della storia della miniatura medievale, grazie anche alla riunificazione, condotta in quest’opera per la prima volta, di quanto sopravvive della produzione manoscritta, in particolare miniata, legata al Laterano e alla Curia Papale.

Les contributions de ce volume enquêtent sur la façon dont les circulations, les mouvements et la mobilité des objets, des modèles, des commanditaires et des idées ont influencé la création artistique entre les siècles VI et XV de la Méditerranée à la côte atlantique. Le volume montre également la dimension internationale et interdisciplinaire de la recherche actuelle sur la circulation artistique et culturelle et la mobilité au Moyen Age européen.

La référence à l'Antiquité, l'importance des échanges artistiques et la question de la réception des images nourrissent une approche transversale aux côtés d'un large panorama couvrant l'architecture résidentielle et religieuse, l'urbanisme, la sculpture, le décor peint, la mosaïque, la tapisserie ou la broderie. Le projet et la commande de l'oeuvre d'art, le rapport entre le texte et l'image ou la postérité de l'art médiéval sont également abordés par des auteurs d'origines intellectuelles très variées, qui élargissent les champs thématiques et chronologiques traités. Ils contribuent à faire de ce volume un bilan des principales voies de recherche sur l histoire de l'art du Moyen Âge en ce début de XXIe siècle.

Un siècle après la fameuse croisade des Albigeois, Toulouse connaît un exceptionnel renouveau artistique et une relative stabilité économique, politique et religieuse. Le quadrillage monastique de la ville dans la première moitié du XIIIe siècle a eu des conséquences inattendues : les Ordres Mendiants installés modestement à leur début sont maintenant à la tête d’établissements florissants qui font appel aux meilleurs bâtisseurs, comme pourront en témoigner les monastères des Cordeliers, des Jacobins, des Carmes et des Augustins, pour ne citer que les principaux d’entre eux.
Parmi les rares éléments de décor et de mobilier des églises parvenus jusqu’à nous, le Parement d’autel des Cordeliers, conservé au musée Paul-Dupuy, chef-d’œuvre de l’art gothique, permet de placer cette création à la hauteur de la splendeur architecturale.
Brodé d’or et de soie, le parement d’autel ilustre les principaux épisodes de la vie du Christ dans une succession de médaillons entre lesquels se glissent des images de saints martyrs et un cycle de saint François d’Assise.

Les résultats de la recherche que nous avons menée dans les dernières huit années que nous présentons dans cette notice ont pour objectif celui de tracer un tableau des circuits de mouvement suivis par les enlumineurs, les manuscrits... more
Les résultats de la recherche que nous avons menée dans les dernières huit années que nous présentons dans cette notice ont pour objectif celui de tracer un tableau des circuits de mouvement suivis par les enlumineurs, les manuscrits enluminés et leurs propriétaires dans la zone géographique située entre la France du Sud (la Provence, le Languedoc), l’Espagne et le Portugal au XIVe siècle. Le dépouillement des collections de certaines bibliothèques en Espagne et au Portugal (dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche postdoctoral financé par la FCT portugais; réf.: SFRH / BPD / 74298/2010) dans les années 2011-2018, nous a permis de retrouver dans la Péninsule ibérique de témoins inconnus du travail des ateliers actifs dans le sud de la France au XIVe siècle. Ces exemplaires luxueux témoignent d’un marché du livre actif, mais aussi d’échanges économiques, culturels et sociaux entre hommes, de la circulation des modes et des modèles au XIVe siècle à travers le territoire géographique qui s’étend de la Provence au Portugal.

Deux fragments appartenant à l'origine à deux manuscrits du Décret de Gratien, réalisés dans le Midi de la France, peut-être à Toulouse, ont été retrouvés dans les fonds des Archives d'État d'Or-vieto en Italie. Le premier fragment (ASCO, Varietà, 1) est une miniature qui introduit les premiers mots de la Cause XX du Décret de Gratien, comme on peut le constater par la lecture du texte qui précède: « […] in causam ingratitudinis inciderunt. Item: §. 1. Non liceat parentibus liberos suos ad solitariam uitam transeuntes abstrahere de monasterio» (phrases finales de la Cause XIX) et du texte qui suit l'illustration : «Duo pueritiae annos agentes a parentibus monasterio traditi sunt […]» (Incipit de la Cause XX; fig. 1). Ainsi à cette époque tandis que quelques manuscrits plus chanceux étaient acquis par des biblio-philes attachés aux codices dans leur intégrité et devaient trouver le sur refuge de leurs remar-quables bibliothèques, d'autres furent dépecés et leurs feuillets enluminés, désormais séparés les uns des autres furent vendus à de riches acheteurs intéressés uniquement par l'aspect artistique des pages isolées et insensibles aux rapports sémantiques qui relient indissolublement, dans chaque folio d'un manuscrit, le texte à l'image et, dans chacun d'entre eux, tous les feuillets entre eux. Par conséquent, on rencontre fréquemment des feuillets enluminés et des miniatures découpées reproduites dans les publications et les catalogues de ventes remontants au XIXe siècle. Parmi ces publications figurent les « Monuments français inédits pour servir à l'histoire des arts depuis le VIe siècle jusqu'au commencement du XVIIIe » de Nicolas-Xavier Willemin , « l'un des pionniers de la Renaissance du Moyen Âge en France » , publiés de façon posthume en 1839. The systematic study of illuminated juridical manuscripts held in the libraries of Portugal, conducted in the context of a post-doctoral research project funded by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), was the occasion for new analyses and an in-depth study of an interesting set of illuminated juridical fragments in the collection of the Biblioteca Pública of Évora. Among these disiecta membra codi- cum, a fragment belonging to the group called Pergaminhos fragmentados and marked “doc. 97 Pasta 1” – the subject of this paper–provides some useful considerations to help clarify the framework of cultural ties that linked Portugal to the Italian Peninsula in the Middle Ages, and additionally shed light on the dynamics and methods of artistic, cultural and juridical exchange that linked these two regions at this time.

Les études des huit dernières années ont beaucoup contribué à mettre en lumière la production de manuscrits juridiques enluminés entre le XIIIe et le XIVe siècle dans l’histoire de l’enluminure du Midi de la France. Cette production est très significative et présente un caractère typique. Entre le XIIIe et le XIVe siècle, en effet, elle est influencée par le gothique linéaire du nord de la France, ouverte à des courants stylis- tiques diversifiés, venus de la Péninsule italienne, de la Catalogne mais aussi de l’Europe centrale, et elle montre une évidente originalité. Le Midi de la France devient donc à cette époque – grâce aussi à la présence d’enlumineurs, de commanditaires, de possesseurs et de manuscrits étrangers – le territoire où se rassemblent et d’où se transmettent des expériences artistiques et culturelles différentes : ce n’est pas seulement un lieu de rencontre entre le nord et le sud de l’Europe, c’est aussi un lieu de contacts et d’échanges entre les diffé- rents territoires qui bordent la Méditerranée (par exemple, les côtes liguro-toscanes et catalanes). La production de manuscrits enluminés de contenu juridique soulève beaucoup de points d’interrogation concernant les centres de production (les lieux et les villes comme, par exemple, Toulouse, Montpellier et Avignon), mais aussi la question des échanges artistiques ainsi que le rôle joué par les artistes itinérants dans le système de production du livre juridique qui était, dans la plupart des cas, contrôlé par les universités. Ces recherches ont mis en évidence les influences réciproques qui se sont exercées dans le monde nord-méditerranéen entre les personnes, les modèles iconographiques et stylistiques et les réalités spatiales. Très récemment nous avons repéré deux nouveaux témoins de cette production, qui n’ont fait jusqu’ici l’objet d’aucune étude approfondie et que nous apportent quelque nouveauté sur l’œuvre du Maître du Missel d’Augier de Cogeux et du Maître du Pontifical de Pierre de Saint-Martial. Ce sont ces manuscrits que sont présentés ici.

In this paper is studied a legal manuscript, now in the Vatican Library, the Urb.
lat. 157, which can justifiably be considered illustrated and decorated in the South
of France, probably in Avignon, in the first half of the fourteenth century by the socalled
workshop of Liber de visionis Ezechielis Rotis. The discovery of this manuscript
enriches the corpus of legal manuscripts connected with Avignon and thus helps to
clarify an aspect not yet deeply discussed concerning illuminated manuscripts produced
during the fourteenth century in the Provençal town located on the Rhone River.

The inclusion of Portugal in the European cultural circles prevailing throughout the Middle Ages also becomes clear in the illuminated medieval juridical manuscripts held in Portuguese library collections. In fact, these manuscripts do in fact constitute part of a set of precious material evi-dence as to the shared cultural identity (written, legal, in-tellectual, artistic) and as well as the dialogue between Portugal and the rest of Europe. These codices also reveal the propensity of then Portugal, and already in effect since the Middle Ages, towards cultural openness that placed it right in the midst of the social and cultural dynamics pre-vailing in the Europe of this period

Between the end of the ninth and the middle of the eleventh century, an ideological schema subdividing the society into three ordines - oratores, bellatores, laboratores - developped in Western Europe. Each one of them was connoted by a specific function and exercised it for the entire society. In a deeply ruralized background, the laboratores and their work represented a fundamental food source for the society as well as for the Church. This role, made their importance grew higher than that of the other orders.
This new social care model needed symbols making it perceptible and communicable also at a physical and touchable level. The representation of Labours of the Months was one of those symbols and was disciplined by cultural mediation by secular and religious authority. This paper aims at analysing the iconographic cycles of Labours of the Months in two illuminated liturgical manuscripts in Emilia-Romagna - Northern Italy - during the twelfth century. It demonstrates how these illuminations depict not only the time of work but also the time of food.

Notre contribution se propose d’analyser le programme iconographique inédit d’un manuscrit des Décrétales de Grégoire IX à l’usage de l’université de Toulouse conservé aux Archives Nationales de la Torre do Tombo à Lisbonne pour montrer quelles sont les particularités et les spécificités de ce programme ainsi que le message que ce programme se propose de véhiculer en relation avec le texte juridique qu’il introduit. Les Décrétales de la Torre do Tombo nous permettent aussi d’ajouter encore un élément important à la connaissance des relations entre la France méridionale et le Portugal au Moyen Âge.

L’article analyse la présence de saint François d’Assise, saint Antoine de Padoue et saint Louis de Toulouse dans le cycle sculpté de la Chapelle de Rieux à Toulouse, remontant au XIVe siècle. La contribution montre la spécificité iconographique du cycle sculpté de la Chapelle de Rieux et explique comment la présence des trois saints dans la petite église puisse être interprétée comme une affirmation visuelle de la part de son commanditaire, le franciscain Jean Tissandier, évêque de Rieux, de fidélité au Saint Siège, dans le plein respect de la ligne de conduite institutionnelle et de l’orthodoxie proclamée par la Papauté. En partant d’une reconstitution du contexte dans lequel s’insère la présence franciscaine à Toulouse et du rôle considérable joué par les membres de l’Ordre dans la vie culturelle et artistique de la ville, l’article analyse ensuite la Chapelle de Rieux, sa structure architecturale et son cycle sculpté et montre comme Toulouse a été au XIVe siècle, pour ce qu’il concerne la création architecturale aussi, un important et vivace centre de création artistique dans lequel expériences et cultures différentes ont trouvé des espaces et des occasions pour se confronter et pour se fondre.
L’articolo analizza la presenza di san Francesco d’Assisi, sant’Antonio di Padova e san Ludovico di Tolosa nel ciclo scultoreo della cosiddetta Chapelle de Rieux a Tolosa, risalente al XIV secolo. Il contributo mostra la specificità iconografica del ciclo scultoreo della Chapelle de Rieux e spiega come la presenza dei tre santi nella piccola chiesa possa essere interpretata come un’affermazione visiva da parte del suo committente, il francescano Jean Tissandier, vescovo di Rieux, di fedeltà alla Santa Sede, nel pieno rispetto della linea di condotta istituzionale e dell’ortodossia proclamata dal Papato. Partendo da una rievocazione del contesto nel quale si inserisce la presenza francescana a Tolosa e del rilevante ruolo svolto dai membri dell’Ordine nella vita culturale e artistica della città, l’articolo passa quindi ad analizzare la Chapelle de Rieux, la sua struttura architettonica e il suo ciclo scultoreo e mostra come Tolosa sia stata nel XIV secolo, anche per quanto riguarda la creazione architettonica, un importante e vivace centro di creazione artistica nel quale esperienze e culture diverse trovarono spazi e occasioni per confrontarsi e per fondersi.
L’articolo analizza la presenza di san Francesco d’Assisi, sant’Antonio di Padova e san Ludovico di Tolosa nel ciclo scultoreo della cosiddetta Chapelle de Rieux a Tolosa, risalente al XIV secolo. Il contributo mostra la specificità iconografica del ciclo scultoreo della Chapelle de Rieux e spiega come la presenza dei tre santi nella piccola chiesa possa essere interpretata come un’affermazione visiva da parte del suo committente, il francescano Jean Tissandier, vescovo di Rieux, di fedeltà alla Santa Sede, nel pieno rispetto della linea di condotta istituzionale e dell’ortodossia proclamata dal Papato. Les livres d’heures analysés ici, conservés dans le fonds patrimonial de la Bibliothèque municipale de Toulouse et si opportunément revenus dans leur centre d’origine, constituent donc des témoignages d’un grand intérêt sur la production enluminée toulousaine des XVe et XVIe siècles. À cette époque, l’activité des enlumineurs dans la Ville Rose a été très intense et la cité au bord de la Garonne a été à nouveau un point de rencontre entre différentes expériences et cultures. Tous ces témoignages sont à prendre en considération dans leur globalité pour restituer la physionomie, pas encore complétement éclairée, de la production de livres d’heures et de livres de dévotion à Toulouse aux XVe et XVIe siècles.

This study presents a precious illuminated Bible, dating to the late 13th century, actually in the Cleveland Museum of Art: the
contribution shows that this significant manuscript is stylistically close to a group of illuminated Bibles from Catalonia and French
Midi. On the basis of its stylistic and palaeographic analysis, the Bible is attributable to southern France. This Bible must be considered
therefore as a concrete example of an original creative process based on geographical mobility of manuscripts, exchanges of
models and interactions between clients, owners and illuminators (often from different backgrounds) in the geographical context
of the Mediterranean arc, between southern France and Catalonia.

Dans ces brèves remarques, on a voulu suggérer certains axes de recherches qui peuvent contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des spécificités stylistiques qui caractérisent les manuscrits peints à Avignon pour le pape Jean XXII en tant qu'oeuvres avignonnaises et dans l'histoire plus globale des productions de ce type. On a essayé de dégager certains traits significatifs de cette production enluminée, typiques de son insertion dans l'histoire de la ville. Par là on a tenté également d'aborder le difficile problème des sources et des origines, des influences subies et exercées, du rayonnement et de l'ouverture de cette forme d'expression artistique. L'importance des expériences formelles languedociennes et toulousaines dans la production enluminée avignonnaise des premières décennies du XIVe siècle est soulignée, et l'on ne manque pas d'évoquer l'arrivée en Avignon d'enlumineurs qui se seraient formés dans les ateliers du Sud-Ouest, à Toulouse mais aussi à Montpellier et, peut-être aussi, à Narbonne. En ce qui concerne les influences, il faut donc envisager un riche et multiple phénomène d'osmose dans l'ensemble des régions du Midi concernées par toute l'activité et la mobilité des pèlerins, des étudiants et des professeurs d'université, des juristes et des fonctionnaires qui constituaient le personnel de la Curie.

These papers intends to show how the production and illustration of juridical manuscripts in the South of France in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries cannot be studied as an isolated local phenomenon; should instead consider them as the happy outcome of an original process and based on creative movement, exchange and interaction of artifices, often from different backgrounds, geographical mobility of manuscripts, clients, owners, models, sharing, finally, in common knowledge of geographical Mediterranean arc, between Catalonia and Northern Italy.The illuminated manuscripts gathered in these papers appear to be indices of a concrete phenomenon of movement of codes in the South of France. The illuminators active in southern France between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries select proposals and inventions, stylistic and iconographic, who come from different parts of Europe and will retain some recasting and bringing in some cases, high levels of quality. The travels of owners, patrons and even the illuminators and the dense network of connections, the intermediaries, mediation also linked to the movement of juridical manuscripts in the South of France have been very important in the process of reworking.

This article presents the recent discovery of one bifolio removed from an illuminated manuscript and reused in the binding of another ancient book. This fragment has been written and illuminated in the first half of the fourteenth century in Southern France, in Languedoc region, and it contains capitula of the juridical text of the Liber Sextus of pope Boniface VIII (1235-1303): De aetate et qualitative et ordine preficiendorum, De filiis presbiterorum, De bigamis, De officio Vicarii with glosses of Giovanni d’Andrea (c. 1270-1348). This fragment is stylistically similar to a group of manuscripts illuminated by the circle of artists responsible for the Missal of Auger de Cogeux (London, British Library, ms. Additional 17006). This group can be probably located in Languedoc, between Toulouse and Narbonne: its closest parallels are a number of manuscripts with legal content, dating from the first half of the fourteenth century, such as the Decretals of Clement V in Brescia (Biblioteca Civica Queriniana, ms. B I 1) and some folia of a dismembered manuscript containing Gratian’s Decretals, recently reassembled, usually regarded as having been produced between Toulouse and Narbonne. The illuminators of this circle, while clearly influenced by Parisian illumination, exhibit a number of distinctive features, in particular the range of grotesque figures which are typical of south-western French production.

Les recherches de divers historiens d'art ont permis d'identifier un ensemble de folios provenant tous d'un même remarquable manuscrit juridique du XIVe siècle, composé et décoré à Toulouse, qui comportait des illustrations originales de haute qualité.

Il nostro intervento si propone di mostrare alcuni dei manoscritti più significativi, realizzati ad uso della Curia Papale e del Laterano dal VI al XIII secolo.
La trattazione si svolgerà seguendo tre filoni principali: la delineazione delle modalità che, nei secoli centrali del Medioevo, hanno portato all’istituzione e allo sviluppo di un’attività scrittoria e di conservazione libraria in ambito papale; l’analisi di alcuni degli esemplari manoscritti più significativi superstiti, testimoni di tale attività; l’analisi infine delle illustrazioni di alcuni di questi esemplari con la finalità di delineare un quadro della produzione libraria ad uso del Laterano e della Curia papale nei secoli centrali del Medioevo, di individuare i problemi metodologici che tale ricerca comporta e di tracciare, infine, nuove prospettive di ricerca.

Il nostro intervento si propone di trattare dei Pontificali duecenteschi ad uso della Curia romana, della loro illustrazione ed infine del loro utilizzo nel complesso architettonico lateranense e nell’Urbe da parte del vescovo di Roma.
Infatti, il Pontificale, com’è noto, è il libro liturgico che contiene le istruzioni e il rituale per il vescovo (è appunto il libro per le celebrazioni liturgiche episcopali); pertanto, il Pontificale è sin dalla sua origine un mezzo fondamentale per la trasmissione e la conservazione della memoria liturgica delle celebrazioni episcopali. I Pontificali « secundum usum et consuetudinem Romanae Curiae » dei quali tratteremo, sono fatti ad uso del vescovo di Roma, il Papa, e del suo entourage.
Il nostro intervento vuole mostrare per quale scopo tali pontificali siano stati creati e illustrati e in che modo questi libri liturgici sono stati utilizzati dal vescovo di Roma nel complesso architettonico lateranense e nell’Urbe.
Il Papa, com’è noto, è, infatti, il vescovo di Roma, titolare della diocesi di Roma e della cattedrale dell’Urbe: San Giovanni in Laterano.
Questi pontificali sono destinati all’uso liturgico del vescovo di Roma (il Papa) pertanto essi potevano essere utilizzati nella cattedrale (San Giovanni in Laterano), nella cappella privata del Papa (il Sancta Sanctorum), nelle altre Basiliche di Roma (per esempio, Santa Maria Maggiore) e nella liturgia che si chiama « stazionaria » quando era il Papa a celebrare, ossia, quando era il vescovo di Roma a celebrare.
Tali manoscritti sono connessi con il rituale e con lo spazio architettonico rituale nel quale celebra il vescovo di Roma, il Papa. Questi manoscritti segnano la codificazione della liturgia papale, dunque la codificazione del cerimoniale liturgico del vescovo di Roma. Questo cerimoniale, scritto nelle rubriche, gli Ordines, tramanda la memoria liturgica del vescovo di Roma. Una memoria trasmessa anche grazie alle illustrazioni, al ciclo iconografico di questi Pontificali dove sono rappresentate, appunto, le cerimonie liturgiche. Infatti, è in questi primi esemplari di Pontificali che il ciclo iconografico si codifica. Tutte queste tematiche saranno esaminate dettagliatamente nel nostro intervento.
I cardinali di Curia, se erano anch’essi titolari di diocesi, avevano, naturalmente, dei Pontificali che differiscono da quelli all’uso del Papa e del suo entourage. Si tratta di Pontificali nei quali si parla semplicemente di « episcopus »; il programma iconografico di questi ultimi non prevede la rappresentazione del Papa ma solo quella del vescovo. Après une ample récolte menée dans les dernières quatre années dans le cadre de mon projet de recherche postdoctorale dans les territoires portugais, cette nouvelle exposition de la Bibliothèque Nationale du Portugal « Le Droit en mouvement dans l’Europe Médiévale: les manuscrits juridiques européens conservés dans les Bibliothèques Portugaises » (Lisbonne, Bibliothèque National du Portugal, 26 Février – 31 Mai 2016), organisée en partenariat avec la Bibliothèque Publique de Evora, la Bibliothèque Générale de l’Université de Coimbra, la Bibliothèque Municipale d’Elvas, la Bibliothèque Municipale d’Avignon, la Biblioteca Comunale degli Intronati de Sienne, la Bibliothèque Municipale de Toulouse et les Archives Municipales de Toulouse, offre, pour la première fois sur le territoire national portugais, un choix de plus beaux livres juridiques enluminés conservés dans les bibliothèques portugaises. Le parcours met l’accent justement sur les liens du Portugal avec le reste d’Europe, avec une attention particulière pour les contrées méridionales (péninsule Ibérique, France du Midi et Italie). A travers ces manuscrits les visiteurs auront l’occasion de faire un passionnant voyage que leur conduira du Midi de la France à Lisbonne en passant par le reste de la Péninsule ibérique et la Péninsule italienne.

Notre intervention se propose d’analyser et de comparer la décoration peinte des Statuts produits dans le Midi de la France et dans l’Italie communale à la fin du Moyen Âge (XIIe-XVe siècles).
En prenant appui sur quelques exemples significatifs, nous nous proposons tout d’abord d’analyser l’organisation interne de la décoration peinte dans les différents documents en relation avec la structure textuelle interne des Statuts, au plan thématique adopté ainsi que aux principaux thèmes abordés. Cette analyse, toujours en connexion avec l’analyse textuelle, nous aidera à mesurer l’importance relative accordée à la décoration peinte introduisant chaque thème dans un même Statut et, par conséquent, à mesurer l’importance attribuée dans le texte à tel ou tel aspect. On s’interrogera en suite sur la logique qui a présidé à la décoration des textes.
Finalement, on essayera de montrer quelles sont les différences entre le monde communal italien et l’espace du Midi français en matière de décoration et d’illustration des documents statutaires : cette analyse comparée aidera à mieux comprendre les similitudes et les différences des pratiques d’écriture statutaire dans les sociétés de la Méditerranée occidentale à la fin du Moyen Âge.

La décoration peinte du manuscrit J.II.9, conservé à la bibliothèque universitaire de Turin, n’a pas encore fait l’objet jusqu’à présent d’une analyse iconographique et stylistique pointue : notre travail se propose de mener une analyse formelle de cette décoration avec la finalité de contribuer à mieux comprendre quel a été le milieu de production du manuscrit ainsi que l’origine géographique de son enlumineur. Ce travail nous donnera aussi l’occasion de confronter les données issues de cette analyse avec celles issues des recherches d’autres spécialistes qui se sont occupés du manuscrit ; cela nous permettra de contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des phases de création du manuscrit ainsi que de son contexte de production et d’usage.

Il nostro intervento si propone di analizzare l’apparato illustrativo di un inedito manoscritto, conservato nella Real Biblioteca de El Escorial, con il testo dell’ Infortiatum, cioè il secondo volume (contenente i libri del Digesto dal... more
Il nostro intervento si propone di analizzare l’apparato illustrativo di un inedito manoscritto, conservato nella Real Biblioteca de El Escorial, con il testo dell’ Infortiatum, cioè il secondo volume (contenente i libri del Digesto dal 24, tit. 3, al 38 incluso) del Corpus Iuris Civilis attribuito all’imperatore Giustiniano. Questo pregevole esemplare, risalente alla prima metà del XIV secolo, è stato miniato nella Francia meridionale, con ogni probabilità a Tolosa, sede a quell’epoca di una fiorente università specializzata nell’insegnamento del Diritto. Il codice presenta un ricco programma iconografico, distribuito lungo il testo e realizzato entro riquadri miniati posti in corrispondenza degli incipit dei diversi libri dei quali si compone il Digesto. Tale ricchezza illustrativa lascia supporre per questo manoscritto una committenza altolocata. In molte illustrazioni del manoscritto è raffigurato il sovrano ritratto nel ruolo di giudice. Tali rappresentazioni suscitano numerosi interrogativi: nel testo in che relazione era posto il sovrano rispetto all’elemento giuridico? In che modo tale rapporto testo-immagine è tradotto visivamente dall’immagine dipinta? Si tratta certamente di immagini che traducono visivamente l’autorità, il potere giurisdizionale del quale il sovrano era investito. E ancora, fino a che punto tali rappresentazioni contribuiscono a legittimare l’autorità giuridica del sovrano in questo manoscritto e cosi pure in altre tipologie di manoscritti giuridici? A queste e ad altre domande ci proponiamo di rispondere, prendendo le mosse dall’analisi delle raffigurazioni del sovrano nel manoscritto della Real Biblioteca de El Escorial.

La recherche que nous présentons a la finalité de tracer un tableau des circuits de déplacement suivis par les ivoires et leurs commendataires ou possesseurs dans la zone géographique comprise entre la Provence et le Languedoc au XIVe siècle ; un sujet pas encore abordé par l’historiographie artistique. Les ivoires desquels nous voudrions parler sont des témoins d’une circulation d’exemplaires à travers le territoire géographique de la France méridionale ainsi que d’un passage d’ivoires produits à Paris dans le Midi. Ces objets précieux montrent un intéressant phénomène d’osmose artistique et culturelle entre les différentes régions du Midi et du Nord de la France, phénomène qui mérite d’être ultérieurement étudié et approfondi.

Cette communication se propose d’analyser la circulation d’artistes, de manuscrits enluminés ainsi que la circulation de modèles entre le Midi de la France, l’Italie et la Catalogne (XIVe-XVe siècles). On analysera la circulation de modèles, entre XIVe et XVe siècle, dans le Midi de la France en relation avec l’ensemble de la création artistique dans l’espace des rivages nord-méditerranéens. On visera en particulier à tracer les parcours suivis par les artistes, les manuscrits enluminés ainsi que par les modèles entre la Provence, le Languedoc, la Catalogne et l’Italie du Nord entre le XIVe et la première moitié du XVe siècle. Ce seront les échanges, les déplacements, qui seront observés ainsi que les rapports stylistiques qui existent entre les différents genres (sculptures, peintures, enluminures, tapisseries et vitraux). Cette communication vise à réfléchir sur les mécanismes de circulation entre différents espaces culturels et aussi à ouvrir des perspectives utiles pour l’étude et la compréhension des échanges et des transferts artistiques dans le milieu européen méridional en montrant comment le Midi de la France a été aussi un important point de convergence et de départ d’enlumineurs comme de modèles qui se sont diffusés progressivement tout au long de l’arc méditerranéen.

This paper traces the movements of illuminators, illuminated manuscripts, and their owners within the regions of Provence, Languedoc, Catalonia, and the North of Italy, between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It examines the evidence of luxury illuminated juridical manuscripts, which testify to illuminators’ ateliers active in southern France during this period, economic, cultural and social exchanges between communities, and the circulation of modes and models throughout the geographic territory extending from the North of Italy to Catalonia. Agents of this interchange were the pilgrimage circuits and the mobility of students and university professors, as well as the movement through this territory of civil employees and jurists that constituted the staff of the Papal Court.

Une attention particulière sera accordée aux problèmes codicologiques (caractéristiques matérielles, fonctionnalité structurelle) ; à l'étude de fragments enluminés ; aux questions liées à la reconstitution virtuelle des manuscrits enluminés grâce à la découverte de plusieurs fragments et à la reconstitution du contexte historique et économique (valeur des matériaux : parchemin, pigments, tissus) culturel et social de la production du manuscrit enluminé ; à l'étude des techniques d'exécution (fonctionnement des ateliers, systèmes de production).

Un exemple de l'application d'une approche pluridisciplinaire dans l'étude des manuscrits enluminés : l'étude des fragments des manuscrits juridiques enluminés retrouvés au Portugal entre histoire, histoire de l'art et archéologie. L'étude des fragments de manuscrits juridiques enluminés retrouvés au Portugal dans le cadre du projet de recherche postdoctoral de Maria Alessandra Bilotta, financé par la FCT (réf.: SFRH/BPD/ 74298/2010) a été et est l'occasion d'analyser et étudier ces fragments du point de vue historique, historique-artistique et codicologique/ archéologique. Les échanges, auxquels cette pluridisciplinarité conduit, facilitent la réalisation d'une étude ponctuelle à travers une diversité des voies explorées et des procédures analytiques considérées. The Diploma in Medieval Studies entitled European Diploma for the study of Medieval Latin written sources, organised in the framework of the ERASMUS+ programme, was created at Louvain-la-Neuve in 1991. More than twenty European and extra-European universities are involved. The courses focus on methodology and teaching of auxiliary disciplines: Classical Latin, Medieval Latin, History of Libraries, Palaeography, Codicology, Diplomatics, and Text Editing. All courses are taught in Italian, English, or French. The instructors come from different countries with the aim of introducing the students of the Diploma to a variety of methodological approaches and current research perspectives. Teaching takes place in an international setting and in direct contact with the manuscript collections held in the numerous libraries and archives of Rome. Attendance can take three forms: annual (60 ECTS), modular (30 ECTS), and personalised (2 or 4 ECTS). Fontes importantes para a história urbana, os Estatutos (Statuti) e os Costumes (Coutumes, Usatges, constitucions) das cidades medievais são também um elemento decisivo para a construção da memória das cidades na Baixa Idade Média. Uma memória reconstruída com base nos desenvolvimentos sociais e políticos de que os textos e as imagens são o espelho. Trabalho consciente e planeado pelas próprias cidades, os Estatutos e os Costumes não apenas descrevem e contam a sua história, mas também contribuem para a criação, através da escrita, duma memória comum, e desenvolvem um papel fundamental no surgimento duma consciência urbana. As imagens também contribuem para a criação desta consciência. Esta intervenção visa analisar e comparar a decoração e a ilustração dos Estatutos e dos Costumes do sul da França, da Itália comunal e da Península Ibérica, para mostrar as analogias e as diferenças na estruturação visual desta mensagem memorial para melhor compreender as lógicas que regulam a estruturação das práticas da ilustração e da decoração das escritas estatutárias nas sociedades do sul da Europa no final da Idade Média.

Sources importantes pour l'histoire urbaine, le Statuts et les Coutumes des villes médiévales sont également un élément important dans la construction de la mémoire des villes au Moyen Age. Une mémoire reconstruite en fonction des développements sociaux et politiques dont les textes et les images sont le miroir. Travail conscient et planifié, conçu par les villes elles-mêmes, les Statuts et les Coutumes non seulement décrivent et racontent l’histoire des villes, mais aussi contribuent à la création, par l'écriture, d’une mémoire commune, et jouent un rôle fondamental dans le développement d'une conscience urbaine. Les images contribuent également à la création de cette prise de conscience. Cette intervention vise à analyser et comparer la décoration et l'illustration des Statuts et des Coutumes du Midi de la France, de l'Italie communale et de la Péninsule ibérique, pour montrer les similitudes et les différences dans la structure visuelle de ce message mémorial pour mieux comprendre la logique qui régit la structuration des pratiques de l’illustration et de la décoration de la loi écrite dans les sociétés de Europe méridionale à la fin du Moyen Age

Travail conscient et planifié, conçu par les villes elles-mêmes, les Statuts et les Coutumes non seulement décrivent et racontent l’histoire des villes, mais aussi contribuent à la création, par l'écriture, d’une mémoire commune, et jouent un rôle fondamental dans le développement d'une conscience urbaine. Les images contribuent également à la création de cette prise de conscience. Cette intervention vise à analyser et comparer la décoration et l'illustration des Statuts et des Coutumes du Midi de la France, de l'Italie communale et de la Péninsule ibérique, pour montrer les similitudes et les différences dans la structure visuelle de ce message mémorial pour mieux comprendre la logique qui régit la structuration des pratiques de l’illustration et de la décoration de la loi écrite dans les sociétés de Europe méridionale à la fin du Moyen Age

Sexto encontro do ciclo de seminários "Um mês, um códice iluminado", iniciativa do Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH-UNL) em parceria com a Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.
Como já foi amplamente demonstrado por investigações históricas, as ligações de Portugal medieval com a Europa são muitas e expressam a sua identidade europeia. A circulação das obras jurídicas na Idade Média que se confirma pela presença de exemplares de manuscritos jurídicos estrangeiros em Portugal pressupõe a existência de viagens de clérigos, professores, estudantes das universidades.
De facto, encontramos na Idade Média muitos estrangeiros em Portugal e muitos portugueses no estrangeiro: as universidades europeias atraem também muito portugueses. Paris, Bolonha e Salamanca foram, durante o período medieval as mais frequentadas pelos mesmos. Houve-os também em Montpellier, Pádua, Pisa, Oxford, Toulouse e em tantos outros centros universitários. Na circulação de livros jurídicos verificamos um aspecto da influência das correntes culturais europeias em Portugal.
Esta sessão tem como objetivo analisar estes fenómenos de influências, de mobilidade e de circulação de manuscritos e pessoas através da análise de quatro importantes manuscritos jurídicos iluminados medievais preservados na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (Alc. 365, Alc. 173, IL. 111, Alc. 202).

La ricerca che presento, condotta nel quadro di una borsa post-dottorato attribuita dal Dipartimento e dal Laboratorio di
Storia dell’Università di Avignone, si propone di tracciare un quadro dei circuiti di spostamento seguiti dai miniatori, dai
manoscritti miniati e dai loro possessori nell’area geografica compresa fra la Provenza, la Linguadoca, la Catalogna e
l’Italia del Nord nel XIV secolo. Lo spoglio sistematico delle collezioni di numerose biblioteche pubbliche e private in
Francia, in Italia e in Germania, mi ha permesso di ritrovare dei nuovi testimoni del lavoro degli ateliers attivi in Francia
meridionale nel XIV secolo. Questi lussuosi esemplari sono testimonianza di un attivo mercato librario e anche di scambi
economici, culturali e sociali fra gli uomini, della circolazione di mode e modelli nel XIV secolo attraverso il territorio
geografico che si estende dall’Italia del Nord alla Catalogna. Queste scoperte contribuiscono ad evidenziare un variegato
fenomeno di osmosi sociale, culturale, artistica e istituzionale nell’insieme delle regioni del Midi della Francia; fenomeno
favorito ed incentivato dai circuiti di pellegrinaggio, dalla mobilità degli studenti e dei professori delle università, dallo
spostamento attraverso il territorio dei funzionari e dei giuristi che costituivano il personale della Curia papale. Tra i
molteplici temi da sviluppare saranno privilegiati l’esame degli effetti determinati in ambito librario e culturale da questi
spostamenti e la riflessione sulle problematiche relative alla definizione della cultura mediterranea ed alla circolazione
entro questo bacino di artisti, opere, schemi sociali e istituzionali.

Le « Circolo Medievistico Romano » est un cycle de séminaires consacrés à l’actualité de la recherche en histoire, en archéologie et en philologie médiévales. Créé en 1974, le Circolo a suivi un rythme régulier, réunissant des chercheurs de tous les instituts romains (italiens et étrangers) travaillant sur le Moyen Âge. Les séances ont lieu à peu près tous les mois, d’octobre à juin, dans l’un des Instituts impliqués. Les discussions se font en italien et chaque membre médiéviste de l’EFR est fortement incité à présenter une conférence au cours de son séjour à Rome. Bien qu’informelles, ces rencontres sont devenues au fil des ans un lieu important d’échanges et de rencontres scientifiques entre médiévistes de pays et de disciplines différentes (historiens, archéologues, historiens de l’art, philologues, philosophes...).

Le « Circolo Medievistico Romano » est un cycle de séminaires consacrés à l’actualité de la recherche en histoire, en archéologie et en philologie médiévales. Créé en 1974, le Circolo a suivi un rythme régulier, réunissant des chercheurs de tous les instituts romains (italiens et étrangers) travaillant sur le Moyen Âge. Les séances ont lieu à peu près tous les mois, d’octobre à juin, dans l’un des Instituts impliqués. Les discussions se font en italien et chaque membre médiéviste de l’EFR est fortement incité à présenter une conférence au cours de son séjour à Rome. Bien qu’informelles, ces rencontres sont devenues au fil des ans un lieu important d’échanges et de rencontres scientifiques entre médiévistes de pays et de disciplines différentes (historiens, archéologues, historiens de l’art, philologues, philosophes...).

L’IEM (Institut d’Etudes Médiévales) de la Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa en tant que membre du réseau « Ménestrel. Médiévistes sur le net : sources, travaux et références en Ligne » organise le 29 janvier 2016 une journée d’études sur le thème suivant : « Réseaux des savoirs dans l’Europe médiévale : personnes, sources, matériaux ».
La journée a pour objectif d’analyser par une approche interdisciplinaire (histoire, histoire de l’art, archéologie, histoire de la littérature) les réseaux des savoirs au sein du monde médiéval à travers le prisme de la zone géographique européenne. Cette rencontre, qui rassemblera divers contributeurs portugais et étrangers, sera aussi l’occasion de présenter l’actualité des recherches et ressources en ligne au Portugal aux membres du réseau Ménestrel.

The International Colloquium “Medieval Europe in motion” is directly linked to the current postdoctoral research projects of Dr. Maria Alessandra Bilotta on «Portuguese juridical manuscripts production and illumination between 14th and 15th centuries and theirs connections with manuscripts production and illumination in the French “Midi” (specially Toulouse, Avignon and Montpellier) and in the North-Mediterranean regions (Italy and Cataluña)» and by Alicia Miguélez on «The gesture language in the Lorvão Apocalypse and its rapports with other beatus manuscripts».
It is also related to other on-going investigations on cultural and artistic circulation during the Middle Ages carried out by the Research Group <Medieval Texts and Images>, coordinated by Prof. Maria Adelaide Miranda at the Institute for Medieval Studies of the Nova University (Lisbon)

La rencontre d'Avignon a pour objectif de comparer des livres d'Heures du Midi de la France et de l'Italie, afin de dégager d'éventuelles spécificités régionales dans l'organisation, le style et l'usage de ces objets de piété caractéristiques de la fin du Moyen Age.

Cette exposition est la première exposition sur les manuscrits juridiques enluminés organisée au Portugal. Il s'agit d'une initiative de l'Institut d'études médiévales (IEM) de la FCSH/NOVA - Página Oficial de l'Universidade Nova de Lisbonne et de la Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (BNP), en partenariat avec la Biblioteca Pública de Évora, la Bibliothèque générale de l'Université de Coimbra, la Bibliothèque Municipale de Porto, la Biblioteca Municipal de Elvas, le Musée la Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian, les Archives nationales de Torre do Tombo, le Museu Nacional de Arqueologia de Lisbonne, la Bibliothèque municipale d'Avignon, la Bibliothèque de Toulouse, les Archives municipales de Toulouse et la Biblioteca Comunale degli Intronati de Sienne. "Parmi les nombreuses pages de manuscrits réutilisées comme reliures de livres à l'époque baroque, l'élément le plus célèbre de la bibliothèque d'État d'Augsbourg est le fragment de la Bible de Gutenberg découvert l'été dernier. Un autre fragment très intéressant de cette bibliothèque, qui faisait autrefois partie d'un manuscrit juridique et qui sert maintenant de couverture de livre, est une feuille de l'#Infortiatum (deuxième volume du #Digeste) contenant l'ouverture du livre 29: "De testamentum militis" (Dig. 1pr). Notre question sur l'origine du fragment est passée à Alison Stones et à Maria Alessandra Bilotta, qui ont identifié le style de son illumination comme étant proche de l'enlumineur des Coutumes d'Agens (Agens, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 42) et de l'Evangéliaire de #Carcassonne (Carcassonne, Archives départementales de l'Aude, MS G. 288); peut-être même par la main du maître lui-même. Nous avons donc un enlumineur d'inspiration parisienne travaillant dans le sud de la France ou en #Catalogne, et nous remercions Alison et Maria Alessandra pour leur aide dans l'identification de l'artiste, ou du moins du cercle de l'artiste."
